Ten Reasons To Say No To Bringing Her Out September 4, 2009

1. If you fall in love with her, she’ll probably break your heart, because she will need to play the field and date other women before settling down.

2. When she takes you home to meet her family, they will probably sneer at you as THAT lesbian who recruited their “Nice, normal daughter.”

3. She will most likely still contemplate being with men, changing her mind back and forth, weighing the pros and cons and driving you crazy in the process.

4. She is unsure about who she is and this fact will come back to haunt you as she projects her insecurities onto you, wanting you to constantly reassure her that she is the person she strives to be.

5. If she’s been sleeping with men, beware the STD.

6. Every ex-boyfriend, ex-husband and all her other male friends will try and get the two of you out together drinking in the hopes of a three-way, every straight male’s fantasy.

7. She is unsure about how to make love to you and will need some instruction and a lot of validation about how great she is in bed, even if she’s not.

8. She is more excited about the lesbian scene than you so you have to be cautious about getting caught up in her enthusiasm.

9. She may still give off a straight girl vibe, with a trail of men following her around when you’re out in public or at parties.

10. Most of her friends will be straight and will want to check you out, and you will subsequently be made to feel like a bug in chemistry class, as her friends poke and prod you to see what you’re all about.

The Revenge of the Lesbians August 25, 2009

I know this sounds like a campy Sci-fi movie or reminds you of the movie title, “The Revenge of the Nerds, but instead I am writing about how lesbians are coming into the mainstream and taking their rightful place in the world without apologizing. It is hard to turn on the TV or watch an entertainment news show without hearing about a lesbian, with no apologies offered. Finally.

Thanks to Ellen, Rosie, Melissa, Amy Ray, Rachel Maddow, and even Lindsay Lohan for getting out there and shaking it up. The rest of us owe you for being the sacrificial lambs. I’m very thankful that you have represented us in such a positive fashion, even given the barely lukewarm water environment you  waded into, fearless and honest.

With lesbians coming out in record numbers and TV executives finally sitting up to take notice and including lesbians in daytime soap operas and evening dramas, the lesbian subculture is finally visible. Watch for the return of Natalia on the popular soap, Guiding Light. Lesbians are not only getting their footing on the small screen, they are also making their presence known on the big screen, as Hollywood can no longer ignore the arrival of the lesbian. Hugs and kisses to Ellen. Be on the lookout for a new movie coming out entitled, Black Swan, where Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis end up in bed together as rival ballerinas.  Can you say….dancing in the sheets? Sounds like fun.

The good news is that lesbians are now an “In Group.” And if the kids are the trendsetters, lesbians have definitely arrived. One teacher friend of mine who teaches eleventh grade english says that teenage girls actually pretend to be lesbian because they think it’s cool. I’m not sure this type of thing would happen in small town USA, but in Clarkston, Georgia, it is an interesting development.

And something to note about lesbian acceptance and popularity is results of a Gallup Poll taken in May of this year. While the majority of Americans, scoring in at 56% think same-sex relations should be legal, 57% of Americans who do not personally know a gay or lesbian person think same-sex relations should NOT be legal. So, come out already! We’re a likeable bunch, gaining favor for our cause of equality once we have the guts to admit who we are.
